Knapp\u2019s outline of a sprint is different from a Scrum sprint in which a bigger task is broken down into smaller, more manageable ones that are executed in a given timeframe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His book is a DIY guide designed to take you through a sprint week, from Monday to Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Knapp explains:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOn <b>Monday<\/b>, you\u2019ll map out the problem and pick an important place to focus. On <b>Tuesday<\/b>, you\u2019ll sketch competing solutions on paper. On<b> Wednesday<\/b>, you\u2019ll make difficult decisions and turn your ideas into a testable hypothesis. On <b>Thursday<\/b>, you\u2019ll hammer out a realistic prototype. And on <b>Friday<\/b> you\u2019ll test it with real live humans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Knapp\u2019s sprint idea involves the following processes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sprint Planning Phase<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Starting with a big problem<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deciding roles and responsibilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Agreeing on a time and space (when and where to do the sprint)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Monday<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>find a long-term goal (The idea of the sprint is to test if that goal is something you should pursue further)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Define the problem<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Interview experts to get a clear sense of what you are dealing with<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Decide on a focus for your sprint. What is the outcome you expect on Friday afternoon?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tuesday<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Look for old ideas: What has worked in the past and what can you build on?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sketch out some first ideas and solutions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wednesday<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Choose the best solutions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you have competing ideas, try to keep them alive<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make a storyboard for a first prototype<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Thursday<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Don\u2019t build a product, build the facade of a product<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Find the right tools for prototyping, divide tasks, and start \ud83d\ude42<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Friday<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Get insights from 5 potential customers on your prototype<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Find patterns and plan the next step<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why it\u2019s important to go fast<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A sprint gives you an opportunity to fast-forward, test ideas in your team and first customers. And all of this before making enormous time commitments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is Knapp\u2019s idea of a sprint again:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe sprint gives our startups a superpower: They can fast-forward into the future to see their finished product and customer reactions, before making any expensive commitments. When a risky idea succeeds in a sprint, the payoff is fantastic. But it\u2019s the failures that, while painful, provide the greatest return on investment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The benefit of a sprint is that you don\u2019t waste time. There is no time to second-guessing, to get uninspired, to lose focus. In an article published on <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@jakek\/go-fast-to-stay-authentic-57f2983ccecc\">Medium<\/a>, Knapp explains why it is so important to go fast:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSpeed keeps you authentic. If you\u2019ve got a weird, opinionated, crazy, possibly-stupid-possibly-great plan, and you take a long time to think it through, revise it, and make it perfect, you water down and wash out the goodness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to do a Scrum Sprint?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At Usersnap we are not only using sprints to come up and test new ideas, but also to streamline our work processes. You might want to use S.M.A.R.T. goals that are: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely. Setting realistic goals for a short time period such as a sprint is crucial for a successful experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Assign Responsibilities <\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each part of the team \u2014 the development team, product owner, and scrum master \u2014 has specific daily roles and responsibilities. While each member of the development team can select the tasks of highest need and completes them as quickly as possible, the scrum master maximizes the team\u2019s productivity by removing roadblocks and protecting the team from external distractions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Execution Phase<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Keep everyone updated <\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though everyone might have their own things to work on, make sure everyone is updated. Even when we are doing a sprint, we are still doing a daily standup meeting with our dev team. It is a chance for everyone to ask for help or offer suggestion on what other people are doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Mid-Sprint Update <\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on the duration of the sprint, it might make sense to have a mid-sprint update on where you are standing on goals and progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">After the Sprint<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Recap <\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sit together with your team and think about what went well and what didn\u2019t. Were responsibilities assigned according to strengths and skill sets?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Celebrate <\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Celebrating your work is important. We make sure to take some time to sit together and celebrate our successes either in small teams in our office or at our company parties and get-togethers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wrapping it up.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sprints offer a limited timeframe to work on new ideas or to finish tasks in a given time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSprints offer a path to solve big problems, test new ideas, get more done, and do it faster\u201d, writes Knapp. Instead of spending endless hours overthinking your options, sprints help you work productively, more focused, and in the end happier. A sprint &#8211; in Knapp\u2019s sense &#8211; might help you save effort and money in the long run. \u201cYou don\u2019t want to spend months or years on a hunch that turns out to be wrong,\u201d Knapp says. With a planning sprint, \u201cyou\u2019ll find out very fast.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are doing sprints regularly &#8211; and not just to test out new ideas &#8211; it can help you to reach your goals in a way that is more fun and satisfying for everyone.
