1. Gerri Martin-Flickinger, CTO, Starbucks<\/h3>\n\n\n

Gerri Martin-Flickinger is not <\/span><\/span>just<\/span><\/span> the first female CTO of coffee giant <\/span><\/span>Starbucks<\/span><\/a>, but their first CTO ever<\/span><\/span>. She joined the company in November 2015. In the past, Gerri worked as CIO and VP at Adobe Systems. She played a key role in Adobe\u2019s move towards becoming a cloud-based service. In the past, she served as CIO of VeriSign and CIO at McAfee Associates, Inc.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Starbucks, Gerri is running the company\u2019s IT department. <\/span>She focuses on advancing their global technological strategy, with an emphasis on big data and cloud computing<\/span><\/span>. Her vision is that of <\/span>technologically<\/span><\/span> connected coffee shops. <\/span>In the future, customers will be able to walk into a new branch and <\/span><\/span>are greeted by<\/span><\/span> name and their usual order on a screen<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/div>\n

2. Susie Wee, CTO of DevNet Innovations, Cisco Systems<\/h3>\n\n\n

As VP and CTO of Cisco\u2019s <\/span>DevNet Innovations<\/span><\/a>, Susie Wee was integral to the platform\u2019s launch. Today, she continues to run its operation. DevNet is an online community for developers and network engineers. They have over 80,000 active members.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“As Cisco shifts to a software and services company, we realize that developers give Cisco the ability to scale and help create the value that our customers consume,” Susie said in a <\/span><\/span>blog post<\/span><\/a> in 2014<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Jane is CTO for one of the largest beverage companies of the world. She has lots of insights to share about what life as a female professional is like in a male-dominated area like IT.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rebecca Parsons is CTO for software development and IT consulting company <\/span>ThoughtWorks.<\/span><\/a> She is trying to change the face of the tech industry by bringing more women into the business:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe tech industry <\/span>really<\/span><\/span> wants to believe it\u2019s a meritocracy and it\u2019s not. <\/span>We need to come to terms with the unconscious bias and recognize the assumptions we make without knowing our biases are influencing us,\u201d<\/span><\/span>. Or, in other words: \u201dWe have to think about the \u2018brogrammer\u2019 culture; it\u2019s a kind of fraternity.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

5. Padmasree Warrior, former CTO at Cisco (now CEO of NEXTEV USA)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

With two women in leading technology roles, Cisco seems to be a very progressive company <\/span><\/span>in terms of<\/span><\/span> gender equality<\/span><\/span>. <\/span>CTO Padmasree Warrior is a big advocate of addressing gender issues in technology (and other industries as well for that matter)<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a blog post published by<\/span><\/span> Huffington Post<\/span><\/a>, Padmasree talks about the problems girls and women face when trying to enter jobs in tech: \u201cThere is an outdated belief that girls are not as good at science and math subjects as boys<\/span><\/span>. <\/span>But according to the report<\/span><\/span> Generation STEM<\/span><\/a>, high school girls earn more math and science credits than boys do, and their GPAs, aggregated across math and science classes, are higher than boys<\/span><\/span>. Still, these stereotypes can hold girls back and question their abilities.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

6. Susanne Kaiser, CTO, Just Software AG<\/h3>\n\n\n

Susanne Kaiser is CTO of the German next-generation collaboration software <\/span>JUST SOCIAL<\/span><\/a>. <\/span>She has a background in computer science and over 15 years of experience in software development<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Susanne\u2019s path into technology was not a straightforward one. She grew up in a family running their own mechanical engineering business. Her parents had plans for her to become part of the family operation. Due to a lack of passion for engineering, she started a traineeship in sales. She discovered <\/span>quickly<\/span><\/span> that sales was not her favourite area either. <\/span>But programming was part of her traineeship, and she soon discovered her passion for creating software<\/span><\/span>. 20 years later, she is one of the leading faces of the German tech scene.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

7. Hannah Wolfe, CTO and co-founder, The Ghost Foundation<\/h3>\n\n\n

In 2013, Hannah Wolfe co-founded <\/span>Ghost<\/span><\/a>, an open-source publishing platform. <\/span>After an <\/span><\/span>incredibly<\/span><\/span> successful kickstarter campaign, the platform kept growing at a fast pace<\/span><\/span>. <\/span>Despite the early success, Hannah stresses that the platform is <\/span><\/span>inherently<\/span><\/span> open source: “We\u2019re not here to make a million dollars, we\u2019re not here to <\/span><\/span>implement<\/span><\/span> an exit strategy<\/span><\/span>. We\u2019re here to build something and give it to the world.”<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As CTO of the UK-based company, Hannah is overseeing the technical development of the platform<\/span><\/span>. She discovered her passion for technology<\/span> at a very young age. For her 6th birthday, her dad bought her a 486 computer. “I was <\/span>just<\/span><\/span> blown away, and I wanted to know how it worked. I kind of got hooked then. By the time I was 9, I was able to build computers myself. I was <\/span>really<\/span><\/span> into the hardware side of things from when I was <\/span>really<\/span><\/span> little.”<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

H<\/span><\/span>er love of computers brought her to coding when she learned her first programming language, HTML: “I was <\/span><\/span>really<\/span><\/span> excited that with a simple text editor I could make the computer do something\u201d<\/span><\/span>. <\/span>These days, she is still using code to make computers do something, although on a <\/span><\/span>slightly<\/span><\/span> bigger scale<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
