Most people and tech companies seem to struggle with hiring developers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And since I have the feeling that hiring is a topic that doesn\u2019t get too much talk and attention (maybe because of people struggling with it), I think it\u2019s our obligation to share the biggest lessons we\u2019ve learned at Usersnap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"acf-cta\" style=\"background-image: url(https:\/\/usersnap.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Group-1000004194.svg); width: 100%;\"><h2>Try Usersnap for Product Development<\/h2><a href=\"https:\/\/usersnap.com\/signup\" class=\"cta-button\">Try Usersnap Now<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hiring must be a top priority<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In most tech companies, especially those fast growing ones, hiring is a top priority.<br>People are one the core success factors for every tech company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or as Sam Altman from YC <a href=\"http:\/\/playbook.samaltman.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">states<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Mediocre teams do not build great companies.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Define the responsibility of hiring<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When looking at most startups and small companies, we see that hiring is a big topic among CEOs and\/or co-founders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In most cases, small companies do not have their own Human Resource department or a HR person. The responsibility of hiring people is mostly assigned to the CEO or is shared between the co-founders.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/usersnap.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/hiring-developers.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"632\" height=\"381\" src=\"https:\/\/usersnap.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/hiring-developers.png\" alt=\"hiring developers learnings\" class=\"wp-image-6904\" srcset=\"https:\/\/usersnap.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/hiring-developers.png 632w, https:\/\/usersnap.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/hiring-developers-300x181.png 300w, https:\/\/usersnap.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/hiring-developers-140x84.png 140w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 632px) 100vw, 632px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moritz Plassnig, CEO at Codeship, wrote this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/hiring-single-most-important-skill-founder-moritz-plassnig\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">great piece on hiring<\/a> and why hiring is the single most important skill as a founder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Hiring is not magic, it\u2019s not luck, it\u2019s a skill.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hire the best full stack developers you can get.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In general, there are quite a few discussions on whether to focus on hiring specialists (e.g. front-end, back-end developers) or generalists (full-stack developers). Depending on your team size, your answer probably differs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For us, as a team of 5 &#8211; 10 developers, one of our biggest learnings was the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Go general. And hire the best full stack developers you can get.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Or as <em>Raquel Velez<\/em> from <em>npm<\/em> put it in her talk at <a href=\"https:\/\/scriptconf.org\/blog\/script17-roundup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ScriptConf<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;No one in our team is an expert in anything.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote twitter-tweet is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;No one in our team is an expert in anything.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rockbot\">@rockbot<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/scriptconf?src=hash\">#scriptconf<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/rklnD4fV6U\">pic.twitter.com\/rklnD4fV6U<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2014 Thomas Peham (@tompeham) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tompeham\/status\/824974881632686080\">January 27, 2017<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Being a <a href=\"https:\/\/usersnap.com\/blog\/how-to-become-a-full-stack-developer\/\">full-stack developer<\/a> requires you to know about all the front-end technologies and all the back-end technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It would demand you to know all of the <a href=\"https:\/\/usersnap.com\/blog\/programming-languages-2017\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">programming languages<\/a>. Or at least the most used ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to be good at working with everything, ranging from databases to user interfaces and the stuff in between. But is that even possible? Is it unrealistic to expect someone to be good at everything?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hire a diverse team.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/stackoverflow.com\/research\/developer-survey-2016\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stackoverflow\u2019s developer study<\/a>, 73% of all developers think that diversity is \u201c<em>at least somewhat important in the workplace<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And even more important developers who influence hiring decisions are \u201c<em>more likely to believe in the value of diversity<\/em>\u201d than other developer types.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.itechart.com\/blog\/hiring-developers-startup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hiring a diverse tech team<\/a> is not easy, however, it must be on everyone\u2019s list and luckily the first startups and company publicly share their diversity facts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/matterapp.io\">Matter<\/a>, a new company by Buffer co-founder Leo Widrich, is helping other companies to attract a more diverse pool of applications.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/usersnap.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/matterio-diverse-team.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"887\" height=\"709\" src=\"https:\/\/usersnap.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/matterio-diverse-team.png\" alt=\"matterio diverse team\" class=\"wp-image-6905\" srcset=\"https:\/\/usersnap.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/matterio-diverse-team.png 887w, https:\/\/usersnap.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/matterio-diverse-team-300x240.png 300w, https:\/\/usersnap.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/matterio-diverse-team-140x112.png 140w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 887px) 100vw, 887px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>screenshot matterapp.io<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>[otw_is sidebar=otw-sidebar-3]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Go in on remote or stay out of the remote game.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a big buzz about <a href=\"https:\/\/usersnap.com\/blog\/remote-web-development-teams-productivity-boosts\/\">remote work<\/a> and digital nomadism nowadays. And it\u2019s great. It was never easier to work wherever in the world you like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And from a hiring perspective, it seems to be pretty promising to hire remote developers as well, as it allows you to better scale up your team and resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bugtrackers.io\/interview-xebialabs-martin-van-vliet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Martin Van Vliet<\/a>, VP of Engineering at XebiaLabs&nbsp;put it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s a challenge to find good people, and just looking locally isn&#8217;t going to work.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there\u2019s a big but here. At least for us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First of all, you need to make sure to get a clear head on the definition of remote vs distributed teams. Our friends at Blossom wrote this great article on remote vs distributed teams. Go and check out their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blossom.co\/blog\/remote-versus-distributed-teams\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">distributed team test<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We truly believe that more and more jobs will be done via remote work. We, as a team with offices in two different cities, learned that having one (or two) physical offices and remote team members is a challenge. If you do not have the required technical skills, cultural fit won\u2019t save you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it\u2019s easier to teach someone technical skills. Teaching someone how to fit into our culture, on the other hand, is close to impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even with the <a href=\"https:\/\/remotepeople.com\/best-remote-staffing-agencies\/\">help of remote staffing<\/a> to fill critical roles quickly, rushing into hires without considering cultural alignment can backfire fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don\u2019t want to state that you need to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truthfinder.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">find people<\/a> who are similar. It\u2019s pretty troublesome in the long run&nbsp;if you only hire developers with whom you can be best friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall, it\u2019s important that the people you are going to hire share the same company values and visions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wrapping it up.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As stated in the headline, hiring developers is not easy. There are quite a few obstacles you need to overcome. And even if you&#8217;ve found the best developer which is willing to work for you, you still need to ensure that you&#8217;re building a diverse team with a shared vision. As remote work is gaining popularity, you also need to find a clear answer on where you stand at that topic.
